Rio de Janeiro was both the first and last stop on our trip. For those who have yet to visit Rio its a beautiful, if at times troubled, city. Some of the most destitute people in the world share neighborhoods with the elite. Its one of the starkest inequalities in the world. Parts of the city wouldn't be out of place in Beverly Hills while others look like the slums of Johannesburg. Despite its challenges, Rio is an enchanting city -- filled with music, samba, and an eclectic mix of cultures. Its location is one of the most beautiful in the world -- the dramatic peaks of Corcovado and Sugarloaf tower over the Atlantic.
Directly behind me you can see one of Rio's favelas (the ubiquitous self-built houses of Rio's poor). Beyond that is Ipanema beach -- a neighborhood known for its high fashion and high-rise apartments.
This is one of the tasty meals we had in Rio (feijoada). Later, at an all-you-can-eat pizza place we tried octopus pizza and watched as others ordered french fries pizza and then had more french fries on the side.
Of course, no trip to Rio would be complete without visiting Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado.
Unfortunately, we weren't the only ones with this idea.
On our last full day in Rio we decided to go hang gliding.
