Motels in Brazil
Driving down the highway in Brazil, motels are everywhere. Unlike in the States, however, motels are not a budget option for a family looking for a place to stay. They are pay-by-the-hour and have one reason only -- sex. They first became popular as a place for privacy for young people who still lived with their parents. Now, however, they are popular with all sorts of couples. Even married couples go to motels for romantic evenings. Supposedly, some of them are quite nice and are known for stylish layout and lavish furnishings. I'll just have to take their word for it. Despite many protestations that they are classy, romantic, and "cleaner than your house would be" the idea makes me nauseous. I'm all for experiencing Brazilian culture but that is a step too far.
If you are interested in the love motels this is a website (the pictures do actually look pretty nice):
